I hope that at some point in your life, you will try making your own pickles. They are so much better than the limp, lifeless things you buy in the store. These chunk pickles will be like bread and butter style pickles, with the sweet element. You can cut the sugar back and makes them less sweet. If you are like me and you like pickles with onions, slice them and cook them along with the pickles.
Pare 7 lbs. of cucumbers. Cut into pieces and soak in strong salt water three days. Freshen and boil in weak vinegar and grape leaves until tender (not too long or they will be mushy.) Drain and cover with the following: 3 pints weak vinegar, 2 ½ lbs. sugar, 1 oz. stick cinnamon, 1 oz. whole allspice and 1 oz. whole celery seed. Pour over cucumbers hot, let stand 24 hours, then reheat and pour over again. Put in cans or jars.
