Applesauce Drop Cookies

There is no reason not to make applesauce at home, in my opinion.  You can make small batches for one or two people in on the stove top or in the microwave.  How could you get any more natural and organic than making the stuff yourself?  Even better, fill your crockpot with apples, some cinnamon and nutmeg, and leave it on while you go to work.  You will come home to a house that smells like heaven, and you will have applesauce that you can freeze or put in canning jars.

After you make your homemade applesauce, try this recipe for Applesauce Drop Cookies.  They will be moist and would be great on a cold evening with a mug of steaming hot, spiced (or spiked) cider.

Applesauce Drop Cookies

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple sauce

1/2 cup nuts

1 cup raisins

2 1/4 cups flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons soda

Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, creaming continually.  Add apple sauce, chopped nuts and raisins and mix well; then fold in sifted dry ingredients.  Drop from spoon on a cookie sheet and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 25-30 minutes.
